Pune (also called Poona)

Pune is one of the booming cities of India. Thanks to its attractive location, Pune has become a centre for Software, BPO, Pharmaceutical, Automobile and Light industries. International players such as Microsoft, Facebook, Google, IBM, Amazon, Electronic Arts, HP and Oracle have large development centres in Pune; even the German industry is represented, with names such as Volkswagen and Mercedes, who have set up their own factories here.

Moreover, Pune is an important centre for education and is often called The Oxford of the East. About 200,000 students – many from abroad – study in various universities of the city.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Pune / Poona acquired international popularity through the controversial Guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his dancing disciples, who came on a pilgrimage to his Ashram in Pune in the thousands. Today, those who come to Pune mostly have professional / business reasons or come to study or to complete an internship or training here.
