Location, Weather and Seasons

The city of Pune falls in the Indian state of Maharashtra and is located on the Deccan Plateau around 200 km inland from the West Coast. Thanks to the elevation of about 600 metres, Pune enjoys a pleasant climate all year round (except for the hot months of March, April and May). Even the monsoon rain is tempered here, since the heavy clouds deposit their rain in the surrounding hills where huge dams catch the rainwater to supply water to the city. Throughout history Pune has been picked as a city of choice for its temperate climate and its geographical location – as by the Marathas, the Peshwas and the British.

The best time to travel in Pune is between October and February. The heat starts from March onwards with temperatures peaking to 42oC in the hottest month of April. Thundershowers in May bring some relief from the heat. The monsoon sets in at the beginning of June and continues till the beginning of October, keeping temperatures more or less under 30oC. The coldest time is between October and February with night temperatures dipping to under 10oC. The days are warm at 25oC or so with sunshine and dry wind.
