Sports and Recreation

The most popular sport in India is cricket which is also true for Pune. Youngsters play cricket and not football in the few open spaces in the city. The Nehru Stadium serves as a venue for important club matches and sports events. If fireworks are set off on the roads – which happen quite often – it is for one of two possible reasons: either a marriage procession is on its way or India has won an international cricket tournament.

If you live for a long period in Pune and wish to take up sports, there are many possibilities available:

Walking and Jogging

It is not always easy to find suitable walking tracks in Pune, a city which has developed haphazardly as a metropolis and has completely missed out on rational town planning.  There are just a few, mostly small parks in the city and as good as no open spaces. The roads are overcrowded and most of them have either no pavements or they are littered with various obstacles.

Some of the best places to go for a walk or jogging are the University Campus, Agriculture College (in Shivaji Nagar) as well as various public parks such as Kamala Nehru Park, Sambhaji Park, Shahu Udyan, Peshwe Park, Saras Baug, Empress Garden, Taljai Hills and Bund Garden.

Cycling

Cycling is healthy, but not in Pune. In the dense traffic one is in danger of losing life or limb, plus one is exposed to health hazards with the clouds of exhaust. Cycling paths are nonexistent or unusable.  If you are addicted to cycling then best use an indoor cycle. Fitness machines are easily available in Pune.

Yoga

With its Hatha Yoga Institute, Pune is home to one of the world’s most respected Hatha Yoga centres. If you wish to learn under the guidance of experienced yoga teachers, register well in advance. There are also a number of smaller institutes with competent teachers.

Swimming

The few public swimming pools in Pune are particularly overcrowded in the summer months and are not the most hygienic.

Clean pools are basically found only in the 5 star hotels, which often have entrance charges for non guests. Numerous health clubs also have safe pools.

Tennis

There are many tennis courts in Pune, one of the best known being the Deccan Gymkhana Tennis Court.

Golf

You can play golf on the Poona Club Golf Course on the Airport Road.

Fitness Studio

There are many fitness studios in Pune known here as gyms. Gyms are very popular and with good reason as there is little scope for outdoor activity in Pune. Look for a suitable gym in your locality.

Paraglyding

There are many paraglyding schools close to Pune within a radius of 50 km. The following three are the best known ones:
